ARTIST'S RESIDENCY 2011
The Studio

Our Program:

We recognize the need for post-graduate artists to receive highly advanced input and information specific to their particular aesthetic direction.  Uniquely expressive and experimental artists, who have gone far beyond the familiar materials and processes they studied in school, often find themselves adrift and unable to make major break-thrus in their work.  Often this block is the result of life changes, conceptual changes, and the resultant need for changes in their art - the printmaker may need to paint, the painter may need to sculpt, and the sculptor may need to explore drawing, glass and cast iron.  Usually the frustration is that you do not have the facilities nor do you know enough initially to begin exploration in your potentially new expressive direction.  Self-teaching takes forever, and taking special workshops in new processes and techniques usually means disregarding you own personal aesthetics and starting all over again as a freshman with new technical issues.

Our program here at the Sodus Art Banck is designed to provide artists with the logical alternative.  From our applicant pool we select 4-6 artists per session whose work demonstrates strong, expressive personal direction, and exploratory creative search.  Each member of this small group of unique artists will have submitted a proposal of their artistic objective, which enables us to provide input, have presentations, give critiques and dialogue addressing their specific aesthetic direction.  This, and our "artistically safe" climate in which to do expermental work, plus our genuine desire to see artists like ourselves evolve their direction in new media combinations, creates the Sodus Art Banck atmosphere and is the essence of our Artist's Residency Program.

The Sodus Art Banck artist's studios are located on three floors of the old Gaylord State Bank, built around 1895.  A great fire roared through Sodus in 1907, turning building after building into ashes until it was finally extinguised at this very same historic site.  Today you can still see a few of the charred rafters in the Painting Studio.

Eventually, The Great Depression put the Gaylord State Bank out of business and after serving various small businesses over the next several years, it finally became The Sodus Art Banck in 1990.
